Think tail fins from the cars of the '50s and '60 and you've got the idea for these classic wall shelves. Custom size them to the measurements of your room and choose bold bright colors of paint. They're great in a kid's room for displaying all their trea
Begin with the upright support pieces. Make a template from craft paper to create the curve of the outer edge of the upright support, starting narrow at the bottom and curving outward at the top, custom sizing to fit the wall.
Cut the desired number of upright pieces from 3/4-inch MDF. It is recommended that there be one upright piece for every 2 to 3 shelves. Mark the location of the shelves along the upright pieces.
Cut notches slightly larger than 3/4-inch high (to accommodate the thickness of the MDF shelves) and slightly less than halfway through along the back (or wall) side of the uprights.
Cut shelves approximately 8 inches wide and desired length from MDF. Cut corresponding notches to match the ones in the uprights halfway through the shelves. Interlock the shelves and uprights and secure with wood glue and finish nails.
Using the appropriate anchoring hardware for the type of walls (drywall or plaster) affix the upright support pieces to the walls.
Sand and prime all wood pieces using Painter's Touch Primer. Let dry.
Spray paint shelves with two coats of Painter's Touch Dark Gray paint. Let dry. Add a gloss finish using Painter's Touch Gloss Clear.
Paint upright supports with two coats of Painter's Touch Apple Red paint.
